When Should Residents and Fellows Start Looking for a Physician Job?

As you begin moving through your residency or fellowship, the next significant step is finding your first job. While many practices and systems may not be ready to take candidates from your class, you can still begin the physician job search process. The last thing you want is to start conducting your search so late that you have fewer job options to explore. Assess the factors and considerations that can help you determine the ideal timing for your job search as a physician.

  • Specialty and Subspecialty

The timing of your job search can vary depending on your medical specialty. Some medical specialties, such as primary care, may have continuous job openings throughout the year. In contrast, highly competitive specialties or specialized roles, such as Neurosurgery, may require earlier planning and application submission given the smaller selection of job opportunities. Keep an eye on job market trends and the demand for your specialty. Certain times of the year may see increased job postings due to factors like retirements, facility expansions, or the academic calendar.

  • Residency Graduation

For many physicians, the most natural time to begin their job search is during the final year of their residency. As you approach graduation, you’ll have a clearer idea of your skills, interests, and preferences. Starting your job search in advance allows you to explore various opportunities, complete interviews, and secure a position before your training program ends.

  • Fellowship Completion

Depending on the length of the fellowship program, physicians pursuing this specialized training should time their job search to align with the final year and a half or so of their fellowship. These specialized positions are always seeking new physician candidates and can sign new staff a year or more in advance of their start date, so it’s essential to begin your job search at the start or during your fellowship.

  •  Geography and Location

If you have a specific geographic location in mind for your practice, research the job market in that area. Urban and rural settings can have vastly different job availability patterns. Urban markets tend to be more in-demand by physician candidates and generally have less availability than rural areas which are consistently seeking physicians to help bridge healthcare gaps- and are more likely to offer a great array of benefits and perks!

  • License and Credentialing

Depending on the state and facility where you plan to practice, obtaining a medical license and fulfilling credentialing requirements can be time-consuming processes. Establish where you plan to conduct your job search and begin early enough to allow for the licensing and credentialing procedures to be completed before your desired start date.

Building a professional network within your medical specialty can significantly impact your job search. Attending conferences, joining medical associations, and connecting with colleagues who may inform you about job openings or provide recommendations could be key in finding the first chapter of your career. You should also consider utilizing the services of a physician recruiter. If they’re a seasoned professional dedicated to your market, they will not only have insight into trends in your market, but they will also have the pulse on upcoming jobs that aren’t even open yet from their own national professional network of medical employers.

  • Visa Candidates

If you’re an international medical graduate preparing for the job search, you have all these factors to consider and then some. Additional paperwork and credentials must be completed as you navigate the visa process and then you’ll have to verify which job opportunities are open to visa sponsorship.

In truth, it is never too early to start your job search. Starting as early as possible can give you a competitive advantage: you’ll have more time to tailor your application materials (including your CV), practice for interviews, and research potential employers thoroughly.
