After completing medical education, training, and exams, physicians can begin the process of applying for a state medical license. Though each application will likely be similar, individual applications must be completed for each state where you might practice medicine. State Medical Boards will seek to verify your education, references, USMLE completion, and other pieces of information required for the application. The timeline for this stage can vary depending on several factors: 

State Requirements:

• Each state has its own medical board with specific requirements for licensure. Some states may have more extensive application processes, leading to longer processing times. State medical boards typically hold regular meetings to review and approve licensure applications. Depending on the state, physicians may need to wait for the next scheduled board meeting to have their application reviewed and approved. 

Credential Verification:

• The state medical board will review the physician’s credentials, including transcripts, residency training records, and exam scores. This verification process can take several weeks to months. 

Background Checks:

• Physicians are typically required to undergo background checks as part of the application process. 

Interviews:

• In some cases, physicians may need to attend interviews with the state medical board, which can also extend the timeline. 

Delays:

• Any discrepancies or issues with the application can cause delays. If unflattering information has the potential of surfacing during this process, it is highly recommended that you disclose the information and provide an explanation rather than hide it. False statements or withholding information during this process can prevent licensure and have grave consequences on your career.
